Parade Grand Marshal

Jim

Tracing his Irish roots to Laois, Roscommon and Kerry, Jim Moriarty and his wife Margaret reside in Rocky Hill, where they’re involved in their church and community.

Jim’s involvement in the Greater Hartford St. Patrick’s Day Parade dates back more than thirty years. A member of the Rocky Hill Parade Committee since the late 70’s, he was the committee’s Chairperson for a number of years. During the 1980’s, Jim served on the Executive Board of the United Irish Societies in the capacities of: Reviewing Stand, Colleen Ball, and General Chairperson. With former General Chair Jack Holleran, he was instrumental in the incorporation of the Central Connecticut Celtic Cultural Committee. Since the inception of “the 5 C’s” Jim acted as Parade Chair for ten years and held the role of General Chair for another two. The Parade Committee honored Jim and Margaret as Deputy Marshals of the 1994 parade.

A member of the Irish American Home Society, Jim held the office of Vice President for two years and currently sits on the club’s Board of Directors, having served one term as its Chairperson. A long-time feis and festival volunteer, he served as Chairperson of The Hartford Feis for nine years and as Co-Chair of The Greater Hartford Irish Music Festival for two. Jim and Margaret were awarded the IAHS President’s Award in 1998 and were festival honorees in 2006.

Jim wants to thank Margaret, his mom, his siblings, and friends – acknowledging that each of them owns a piece of this award for their constant support.

Person of the Year

Dan

Daniel M. Carey has resided in Hartford for forty years. In addition to holding the position of City Clerk of Hartford , Connecticut since 1993, he has been a Certified Municipal Clerk since 1996.

Daniel is a graduate of Southern Connecticut State University with a B. S. in Geography and an M.S. in Urban Studies.

He is a member of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks, New England Town Clerks Association and the Connecticut Town Clerks Association and serves as its Conference Chairman.

He is on the Board of Directors for the Greater Hartford Convention and Visitors Bureau Inc. He is the Chairman of the Hartford/New Ross Sister City Committee and is on the Board of Directors for Sisters Cities International/Hartford. He has been a member of the Hartford ’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee since 1993, and was the 1995 City of Hartford ’s Parade Honoree. He is a member of the Irish American Home Society and Irish Northern Aid.

His Irish lineage traces back to Ireland , his Father’s Family being from County Waterford and his Mother’s family being from County Limerick . Carey is related to the Former Prime Minister and President of the Republic of Ireland, Eamon DeValera, being his First Cousin, Twice removed.
